Ted Rogers is a multidisciplinary artist based in Margate. Their expansive practice is rooted primarily in movement, yet is unrestrained to the often claustrophobic and technical trappings of dance. Rogers' practice incorporates film, ceramics, installation and the performative act of drawing.
In their work they explore expulsive emotional extremity through stripped-back, high-camp performativity where timing, pacing and rhythm take a brutalist approach to queerness.
As an autistic artist, Rogers is interested in the idea of developing characters as a place of sanctuary. As they find typical social codes and systems paradoxically amusing and painful, Ted finds joy and beauty in parodying these roles. This often takes the form of phantasmagorical films and performances; exaggerated displays of an outsider ‘learning to human’.
To dance is unapologetically romantic. Rogers indulges in this vulnerability and earnestness in all aspects of their practice. Dancing ballets, writing lyrics, love notes, poems, splurges, drawing draped bodies, cathedrals, revelations, listening to organ solos, Mahler’s 5th, burning candles and incense, gardening, healing, massaging and bathing in nature.
Although typically disciplined and monkish in their desire for sanctity and solitude - they ultimately wish to be witnessed. This requires collaboration, communality, connection and hopping into the chaos of other humans.
